fotrally 2009 - that’s how it went
Live coverage
12.00 p.m. And... THERE they go! The two contestants have started the long (We’ll see about that...) walking. More to come...
12.05 p.m. The start took place in the face of a hot sun. It remains to be seen how 25 degrees in the shade affects 101 and 102 (numbers of both participants). Both Radio Stockholm (to be aired around 3 p.m.) and TV4 covered the start!
12.17 p.m. Little more than 15 minutes has passed, and all is still ok. The spirit is high amongst the competitors, and rivalry hasn’t showed yet. Passing cars honk and cheer.
01.22 p.m. The fotrally is now passing Sibble outside of Botkyrka. Its really hot and one of the two participants has forgot to put on sun lotion. Is something frying?
01.38 p.m. The race is going somewhat faster then planed, 6 km/h instead of 5 km/h. They have reached Eldtomta now. A quick stop at a café to get a couple of Cokes and then out on the road again. There are now burning soles aiming for the ferry at Skansensundet.
02.21 p.m. Look at them struggle! They have now reached Ulvsvik and have 4 km left to the ferry. Its soon time for Radio Stockholm.
03.06 p.m. They have now reached the ferry. Nice to sit down for a moment, eh? 17,5 km is the distance covered at 5,8 km/h. Bravo! Linda Aktén at Radio Stockholm claims she have met "the men who will walk until they drop", and puts on "Always" with Arash & Aysel. Suitable! Nature is breathtaking and will hopefully work as a Band-Aid on sore feet.
03.13 p.m. They have far to go...
03.28 p.m. Wile waiting for the ferry, the contestants took the opportunity to cool their feet. No fishes were found afterwards floating belly up... Some chafe was discovered and dealt with. 101 had a blister under the right sole and 102 had one on left big toe. Both were treated with Compeed and covered with double layer of socks. Next milestone isVagnhärad, approx. 20,4 km to the south, and estimated arrival is 7 p.m. if the can keep the same pace as before, that is.
03.38 p.m. fotrally is now being broadcasted on P4 Radio Stockholm.
04.19 p.m. Sunny and bright!
04.47 p.m. fotrally Live has just got the word. TV4 will show fotrally at about 6.30 p.m.
06.35 p.m. fotrally can now be seen on TV4 Stockholm.
06.38 p.m. They are now passing into the district of Trosa. Keep it up, lads!
06.47 p.m. A quick report from 102: “I’m out of juice to my cell. I will change to a new when I get to...” and then his phone went dead. We will see to it that he gets a new battery when he gets to Vagnhärad.
07.17 p.m. Entering Vagnhärad. Its time to eat. Pizza and a lot of ice cold drinks is on the menu. As 102 so clearly states; “The only thing that counts now is fat and carbs. Fat and sugar, fat and sugar!”
08.08 p.m. After refilling energy in Vagnhärad the journey continues to Trosa. And of they went... in the wrong direction. And even further away until they realized they have lost their way. They had to make their way back to Vagnhärad and start all over again. The fatigue is starting to show... And on top of that, they now have to carry their own pack. The escort car with the race-crew has temporarily abandoned the contestants for a nearby camping site. The crew can lock forward to bathing, miniature golf, a delicious dinner and a god night’s sleep. For our two competitors awaits - a looong night. But, as we stated earlier, next up is Trosa. Hear, hear...
09.00 p.m. We are receiving reports of pain and suffering. 102 just told us about how he is starting to feel pain from parts of his body he didn’t even knew he had. If 101 is suffering from anything, he sure does a good job in hiding this. But most likely he’s suffering too. About 45 minutes left to Trosa. Next up after Trosa is Nyköping through the beautiful landscape of Nynäs Nature Reserve... if the boys make it so far, that is...
09.17 p.m. The race is now coming up to 9 hours and 17 minutes. When they reach Trosa (in about 30 minutes) they will have completed 45,5 km with a average speed of about 5 km/h. It’s even further between Trosa to Nyköping, 48,7 km. A total distance of 94 km. They will arrive in time for breakfast.
09.45 p.m. 102 has given up due to his body being worn out. The simple fact of the matter is that it’s been to though. All credit to 101!!
Congratulation Thomas Gjutarenäfve!
Brief interviews will follow shortly.
Interviews
Congratulations, Thomas Gjutarenäfve. You’re the winner. “Thanks a lot! Oh, I’m totally worn out. As tired as I am from all the kilometers, I’m also tired from all the psyching on his part”, says a very tired Thomas over his cellphone.
Psyching? “Yea, well, Pontus almost drove me crazy. He was first injured, then he was ok, and then injured again, and so on. Well you get my drift”, Thomas says with a laugh. “And not moments before he dropped out he started to say things like “This time tomorrow (9 p.m.) we will be in Söderköping”. At that time I thought I would lose and I just wanted to quit”.
How many kilometers do you think you have left in you? “Kilometers? I don’t know. But I do think I would have lasted another 24h, I really do. At least until Nyköping the next morning, off that I’m certain”, says Thomas, confident.
But when Pontus tried to pull his “Söderköping-scam” on you, what did you think of the outcome then? “I actually started to doubt myself. So this victory was unexpected, 110 kg heavy, you know. I thought, ”a night on the lonely highways” - not to exciting, you know. But I think we had spurred each other all through the night, if Pontus hadn’t thrown in the towel”.
But it ended just a few blocks north of Trosa center? “Yes, as did the psychological warfare”, Thomas says with a laugh.
What are you up to now? “I think I’m going straight home now. I need to stretch out. (Thomas are trying to stand up now, after a moment of sitting down... a moment he now suddenly regrets.) “Argh, I’m all stiffened...”
Congratulations yet again, Thomas.
Thomas is going home to stretch out while Pontus is planning to reunite with his family at a nearby camping site. Pontus was runner up, but it looks like his tactic nearly gave him the victory.
Congratulations to second place, Pontus Kylberg. “Thank you”, says Pontus with a laugh. “At the end there I was nearly walking folded in two”.
The contest was apparently to though for your body? “That’s right. I had trouble with my hip, my groin, my Achilles’ tendon, and what ells... But it was foremost my feet that got me. So there’s nothing more to do than give my humble congratulations to Thomas - a worthy opponent”.
And here at fotrally Live we can’t do anything but to agree; congratulations Thomas Gjutarenäfve!
